American Christianity and the Puritan legacy are closely intertwined, from the first settlers of the New World to 21st-century religious nationalism. In this workshop, led by Christina Littlefield (associate professor of religious studies at Pepperdine University, Los Angeles), we will examine this connection spanning several centuries: how the Puritan tradition has shaped American national identity, political culture and religious self-interpretation from the beginning to the present day. The workshop draws inspiration from the authors' latest book, co-authored with Richard T. Hughes: Christian America and the Kingdom of God: White Christian Nationalism from the Puritans through January 6, 2021 (University of Illinois Press, 2025), in which the authors explore the origins of white Christian nationalism and its lasting impact. The presentation will be followed by an informal Q&A session, during which participants will have the opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with the author.
