The international academic conference, “Chosen Nation(s): Historical and Cultural Interpretations of Exceptionalism”, is jointly organised by the Thomas Molnar Institute for Advanced Studies of the Ludovika University of Public Service and the Jewish Theological Seminary – University of Jewish Studies (OR-ZSE), and will be held in Budapest on 10–11 June 2026.
The event aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on the concepts of chosenness, historical vocation and exceptionalism, ranging from religious traditions to modern political theology. The conference's central message is that narratives of chosenness are not merely historical phenomena, but rather enduring tools of legitimacy, exclusion and identity formation.
The invited keynote speaker is Dr Christina Littlefield, Associate Professor of Religion and Communication Studies at Pepperdine University (Seaver College), who holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge. A recognised scholar of civil religion, Americanism, and Christian nationalism, Littlefield is best known for her work 'Chosen Nations: Pursuit of the Kingdom of God and Its Influence on Democratic Values in Late Nineteenth-Century Britain and the United States' (Fortress Press, 2013), which examines the legacy of American and British civil religion at the height of Protestant dominance. Her latest book, 'Christian America and the Kingdom of God' (University of Illinois Press, 2025), traces the history of Christian nationalism from the Puritans to 6 January 2021.
We are accepting presentation proposals (including an abstract of up to 300 words and a professional CV of up to 100 words) until 1 May 2026 at chosennations2026@gmail.com. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by 10 May 2026 at the latest. Participation in the conference is free of charge, and the organisers will cover the accommodation costs of invited speakers. The working language of the conference is English.
A Ludovika Nemzeti Közszolgálati Egyetem Molnár Tamás Kutatóintézete és az Országos Rabbiképző – Zsidó Egyetem (OR-ZSE) közös szervezésében 2026. június 10–11-én Budapesten kerül megrendezésre a Chosen Nation(s): Historical and Cultural Interpretations of Exceptionalism című nemzetközi tudományos konferencia.
A rendezvény célja, hogy interdiszciplináris párbeszédet nyisson a kiválasztottság, a történelmi hivatás és az exceptionalizmus eszméiről – a vallási hagyományoktól a modern politikai teológiáig. A konferencia fő üzenete, hogy a kiválasztottság-narratívák nem csupán történeti jelenségek, hanem a legitimitás, a kizárás és az identitásformálás máig ható eszközei.
A konferencia meghívott keynote előadója Dr. Christina Littlefield, a Pepperdine University (Seaver College) vallás- és kommunikációtudományok docense, a cambridge-i egyetemen szerzett PhD-fokozattal. Littlefield a polgári vallás, az amerikanizmus és a keresztény nacionalizmus elismert kutatója; legismertebb munkája a Chosen Nations: Pursuit of the Kingdom of God and its Influence on Democratic Values in Late-Nineteenth Century Britain and the United States (Fortress Press, 2013), amely a protestáns dominancia csúcspontján vizsgálja az amerikai és brit civil vallás örökségét.
