Az utóbbi évtizedekben egyre több irodalmi mű született a republikanizmus történetéről. Az is jól ismert, hogy a republikanizmus hagyománya korántsem monolitikus - például az olasz, az atlanti, a francia és a német hagyomány között jelentős különbségek vannak. A konferencia célja, hogy Kelet-Közép Európa régiójának republikánus hagyományát mutassa be, problematizálja a térség sajátosságait, szembeállítva az atlanti republikanizmussal. A konferencia előadásai arra is választ keresnek, hogy lehetséges-e egységes republikánus hagyományról beszélni régiónkban.
Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski a University College London lengyel-litván történelmének professzora. Több kötete jelent meg angol és lengyel nyelven Lengyelország újkori és modern történelméről. Számos vendégoktatói pozíció után a varsói Lengyel Történeti Múzeum főtörténészeként is dolgozott.
